For a band that moves at a deliberate pace, Beach House have built up a lot of momentum. After two slow-burning records that have continued to garner new fans, anticipation is high for their Sub Pop debut. Lucky for us, the pressure hasn't gotten to them. Teen Dream seems destined to find it's way to a bunch of Best of 2010 lists.
Beach House spent nearly a year recording this record, and listening to the results, it's hard to imagine that it isn't exactly the record the band set out to make. Opener "Zebra" (mp3 below) starts the record off on a high note, so high it seems like Teen Dream will be one of those records that never recovers from a great opener; however, the greatness of the subsequent songs superbly match the opener, creating an indelible song cycle.
Singer Victoria Legrand sounds more confident and comfortable with her voice than she did in the first two records, and the interplay of her voice with her ambient keys and Alex Scally's ethereal guitar tones is magical.
If Teen Dream is any indication of what 2010 has in store for us, it's going to be a great year in music.
