Centro-Matic is woefully under appreciated, and it's a shame. Will Johnson has been putting out solid records under the names Centro-Matic and South San Gabriel for years, but has never really received the recognition he deserves. Never flashy or hip, Johnson is a true artist that seems compelled to make music for no other reason than he just has to. His workmanlike output and craftsman quality have never waivered, and Candidate Waltz is another fine example of Johnson's talent.

Johnson's skillful guitar and inviting, yet rough, voice are on full display on this record, along with, perhaps, the most straight forward pop songs he's ever written.
